Every campaign setting should have a Quickstart sheet

Dice box, miniatures, pen and eraser - preparing for a roleplaying game

Players are often lazy. While they enjoy playing games, they might not share Game Master's enthusiasm to the campaign setting and it's world, and as getting to know it could require reading somewhere from 10 to 150 pages, they might not really know or understand many things that come up during the game.

Is it good to be able to create the exact character you want?

Having heard that abilities are being rolled again in DnD Next made me think about randomness in character creation. I'll have to say that I've missed random ability generation, and I'm a bit bored of creating exactly the character I want. Rolling the scores (dropping the lowest d6) and then assigning them to abilities you want has something I just like.

Snow-covered gaming terrain

Playing DDM in winter terrain

Playing DDM in winter terrain

One of the earliest terrain items I've created, after dungeon walls and some woods and rocks is winter terrain. Having often seen use, this terrain can be used in almost any genre and world; Marines invading arctic base of an evil mastermind, friends of Drizzt adventuring in Icewind Dale, An icy planet to be explored...

Commander decks got me playing Magic again after 10+ years

Some of my new Magic cards

I used to play magic in 90's, but since that I've only played a few random games with my friends' decks. This post gives you a view to the game from a magic player after getting back to the game after a long, long time. While the new rules felt intimidating to me first, they actually make perfect sense and are much simpler. I'll also write a bit about what you should know if you get back after a long break and what should you be getting. I say straight away that currently random packaging puts me completely off, so I'm getting my cards in non-random packs or as singles.

Pulut (Pigeons) - scratchbuilt wedding cake decoration

Pulut (Pigeons) - the comic wedding cake decoration

I've been drawing Pulut -sarjakuva (Pigeons -comics) for a Finnish young's community site, and like I've often drawn these pigeons to guestbooks and in greetings, I decided to create a decoration for our wedding cake of these comic characters. The same theme was seen in wedding invitation, where one pigeon 'accidentally' prod a ring closer to another pigeon - and the wedding cake decoration was made from this picture.

RPG session series concept: Linked but unrelated games

I have way too many game worlds and genres on my 'to-run' list, so I have no hope of running many of them as a campaign. I would't have enough material to run a campaign for many of them anyway, but on the other hand, I wouldn't want to run them as straight one-shots either; Players often want some continuity, so a series of one-shots doesn't sound so good.
