When you are painting or creating miniatures, scratchbuilding terrain or designing papercraft gaming props, how much effort do you see? Are you going to make everything as detailed as possible, or are you fine with just something vaguely resembling you want it to resemble?
This project started after I got tired of photographs of games taken on an old, almost white D&D miniatures battle map. I looked for vinyl mats first, but it started to look like the ones I was interested in weren't available anymore, and I wasn't perfectly happy about them either, so I decided to create real 3d ones of my own. I wanted to find a really strudy base for the terrains but couldn't find any, making me dig up some hardboard and use it as a base. The result was satisfactory, even if there is a bit distortion.
I've been publishing a lot of roleplaying/gamemastery/miniatures articles recently, and now it's time to get back to modelling. This time I'll show your how to create realistic -looking dunes and desert terrain yourself.
Background and motivation
I've built a lot of fantasy terrain, but not before starting to play Star Wars miniatures game has it come to my mind to create desert terrain. As I started to do it, I realized that it's pretty simple so I could as well create a tutorial while doing it.
Anyone can get a great miniature collections very cheaply, thanks to collectible miniatures vith very rare miniatures and stores selling singles. For as low as $25, you can get a basic set of 50 miniatures that has a lot of those extras your player characters are going to meet a lot, plus a lot of different characters for pc's or villains. I've chosen to use Troll & Toad as I've made a lot of purchases with them I'm happy with, and they have a great collection (including Mage Knight) and good photos of everything.
Brief review for the hasty: Beasts & Barbarians is a sword & sorcery setting that has a feel of familiarity - perhaps because many civilizations have been inspired by historical civilizations. Carefully spiced up with originality, combined with classic sword & sorcery elements and tied together with a believable history this setting make a very tasty stew.
If you've been reading my posts, you know I've become a huge fan of Gramel and it's Beasts & Barbarians products. When Golden Edition came out, I run to buy the pdf right away. This new 210-paged document gives you mainly two new things: New images (which I like a lot, even if I had a small hope of having color graphics instead B&W), adventure generator, npc collection and a bunch of new monsters.
A while ago I got my hands of Beasts & Barbarians and realized it was a perfect setting for the Sword & Sorcery campaign I was planning. I've had plans to run only small sandbox -using adventures with little or no preparation, so I wasn't first planning to buy this adventure even if GRAmel had became my favourite publisher. But I was curious to see what the Gazetteer -part of the adventure had so soon I realized having bought the pdf and wanted to use the adventures in my game.
High Space briefly, with minor spoilers: An inspiring space/scifi setting that gives you an option of running a long epic story or Traveller -like small adventures. The main story feels a bit like Babylon 5 spiced with some cthulhu/galactica -like elements and unique, 'realistic' style space battles.
